Micro Teaching

  1. Wow! Great to view your lesson once more. I am sure that your classmates will identify some good effects in your lesson. In this post i will focus on some of your strengths.

In terms of planning, your lesson plan format was consistent with the one prescribed by the Social Studies department. Objectives were written as Knowledge, Skills, Attitude and the rest of the lesson was well planned.

The introduction was quite good. you set the purpose of the lesson by telling students what they would be learning in the lesson. The use of pictures to elecit responses to achieve this was effective.
Good use of the read -write - pair share activity. Enagging students in reading activities with the text is commendable.

let's see what the others have to say

  2. I apologize for the typos in words such as elicit and engaging.

in terms of weaknesses, i found no major problem with your lesson plan except that the concluding activity should have really been step 5. So you really needed to indicate how you would recap the main points in the lesson.

Before asking the studens to read the importance of land on theri text, you could have activated their prior knowledge, Based on their experiences they would be able to tell why land is important. Did you jsut assume that students knew what the word "misuse" was? make no assumptions, you needed to explain or have a student explai what was meant by the term so that everyone understands pperfectly what you are talking about. A little more explanation on the importance of land based on what students read from the text would have been beneficial. As the teacher you need to explain further so that students do not just get the surface knowledge. A few questions related to the activities that were being depicted in the pictures would have enabled students to think critically about how and why teh land was being misused and possibly suggest ways by which the the resource could be preserved/conserved. Also it is important that you provide assistance while students are working on a task. They were basically left alone and you just waited until they were finished.
Did you review the main points in the lesson? It is important that you bring the lesson to closure by allowing students to tell you what they learned in the lesson. After they have done that thye may be able to form the generalisation.

Do you have any comments for Spruce?

  3. I really enjoyed the activity where we had to create a logo...quite innovative I must say...

The reading/writing connection was also commendable, as we had to read from the textbook, and write our understanding of what we read.

The group work strategy worked well to, as we were able to discuss the info presented in the text. Researchers such as Fisher and Lapp, have recognised that unfortunately group work and cooperative learning are not used frequently in the classrooms. These strategies have many positive impacts on learning.

  4. Points well taken, miss. I agree that i ovelooked some very important issues, however the fact that we were pressed for time lead to this. Your points will definitely be considered in the future.

    Thanks Jeanne!

  5. I am yet to make the connection between microteaching and actual teaching because of the students who are involved in the activity.Iam very aware that I have to pretend that they are secondary students but this is not always easy as the students alreay have so much knowledge on the topics. So sometimes I may take it for granted that I have to explain certain things because I am aware that they know it.

In as much as microteaching is supposed to prepare us for actual teaching, i think it is quite inadequate and does not necessarily test our abilities as we are dealing with different students.

  6. I guess I have so much to say.

I did summarise the lesson, since the main points of the lesson were on the board I reiterated them by pointing them out to the students. This was done twice : midway into the lesson, and at the end. The only shortcoming is that the students were not really involved on this activity.
